Ranker exists for one reason: South African businesses are being sold AI by hype, and there is almost nobody scoring it honestly for local conditions. Search "best AI tools" and you get a list written for San Francisco, priced in dollars, blind to POPIA, and built on the assumption that everyone has fibre and nobody runs their business on WhatsApp. None of that is true here.

What we do

We score AI tools and the companies that build AI, from 0 to 10, against a fixed set of criteria. Each tool gets a score for every criterion, its total is the average, and the total decides the ranking. We compare tools on public information: the vendor's own plan and pricing pages, documented features and credible reports. We look hardest at the things a South African business actually cares about:

• Rand pricing and local billing, not a dollar figure that swings with the exchange rate.
• POPIA-aware data handling, because where your customer data goes matters.
• Local support and real-world fit, including a market that lives on WhatsApp and a grid that does not always stay on.
• Honest value, judged on what the thing delivers, not how loud its marketing is.

What Ranker is, and what it is not

No vendor pays for placement or rank, and there are no sponsored slots dressed up as verdicts. The methodology is public so you can check the working.

How to read a ranking

Every ranking opens with a one-line verdict and a clear number-one pick, then shows the full scorecard with every contender and exactly why it placed where it did, followed by the criteria we judged on. Who writes it

Ranker is written by the Ranker editors. Every ranking lists its sources and the date its prices were last checked, and the same scorecard is applied the same way to everything on the board.
