For most South Africans, the best AI image generator right now is Google Gemini: the free Gemini app makes and edits high-quality images, and the paid upgrade is billed in rand from R104.99 a month. ChatGPT runs it close, Adobe Firefly is the safest choice for business, and Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator is free outright. We scored eight tools on their published plans, prices, limits and terms.
Why Google Gemini is the best AI image generator for most people
Gemini uses Nano Banana 2, the image model Google released on 26 February 2026, for every Gemini app user, free plan included. You describe a picture, or upload a photo and say what to change. Google says the model keeps up to five characters consistent across a set of images and renders legible text for things like greeting cards and mock-ups.
Paying is cheap by the standards of this list. Google AI Plus costs R104.99 a month and Google AI Pro R429.99 a month on Google’s South African price list, and both let you redo an image with the stronger Nano Banana Pro model. The catch is branding: Google says Gemini images carry a visible watermark as well as its hidden SynthID mark, so they suit drafts and personal projects more than finished brand work.
Free AI image generators compared
| Tool | Free plan | Paid from | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini | Create and edit images, within usage limits | R104.99 a month | Visible watermark |
| ChatGPT | Limited and slower image generation | R149 a month (Go) | Small free allowance |
| Adobe Firefly | Free daily generations | R219.65 a month incl. VAT | Daily limits |
| Bing Image Creator | 15 fast creations a day, then standard speed | Free | Microsoft may use your prompts and images |
| Ideogram | Weekly credits for eligible accounts | US$20 a month (about R326) | Free images are public |
| Leonardo.Ai | 150 fast tokens a day | US$12 a month (about R196) | Free creations are public |
| Canva | Up to 20 AI uses a month | R900 a year | Allowance shared with other AI tools |
| Midjourney | No free trial on its website | US$10 a month (about R163) | Images public below Pro |
Dollar prices are converted at US$1 = R16.32 and exclude VAT. Foreign digital services attract 15% VAT in South Africa, so expect the final charge to be higher. ChatGPT, Google, Adobe and Canva already show South African prices in rand.
Is there a completely free AI image generator?
Yes. Bing Image Creator is free for anyone with a personal Microsoft account. You get 15 fast creations a day; after that it switches to standard speed, and Microsoft Rewards points can buy more fast ones. In March 2026 Microsoft began rolling out its own MAI-Image-2 model to Image Creator and Copilot, and says it brings better text inside images and more natural light and skin tones.
Two points about Microsoft’s free image creator before you rely on it. Its terms, updated in March 2026, say Microsoft does not claim ownership of what you make, but you give Microsoft and its partners permission to use your prompts and creations in running their businesses. It also has fewer design controls than the paid tools. For everyday pictures, school projects and social posts, it is hard to beat on price.
If you live in WhatsApp, Meta AI can create images in a chat too. WhatsApp says Meta AI features are only available in some countries and languages, so it may not appear on your phone yet. Image generation also uses far more mobile data than text chat, so save big batches for Wi-Fi.
The best AI image editor for your own photos
Most people searching for an AI image editor want to fix a photo they already have. Gemini and ChatGPT are the simplest: upload the picture and describe the change, such as a new background or a removed object. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images 2.5, released on 8 September 2026 for all plans, edits only what you ask for and keeps earlier changes consistent over several rounds.
For heavier work, Adobe Firefly includes Generative Fill, and Firefly Pro (R438.15 a month including VAT) adds Photoshop on web and mobile. Bing Image Creator’s page also offers AI photo tools to restore old photos, remove backgrounds and expand or enhance images.
Can you use AI images in your business?
Usually, but the terms differ. Adobe says output from its own Firefly models is safe for commercial use because they are trained on licensed and public-domain content, while output from partner models on its plans is your responsibility. OpenAI’s terms say you own your output but warn that other users may get similar results. Midjourney lets subscribers use images commercially, but companies earning more than US$1 million a year must be on its Pro or Mega plan. Ideogram says it claims no ownership of your images.
Similar output matters most for logos, because a trade mark has to be distinctive. Our AI logo generator ranking covers ownership and trade marks in detail.
Why Midjourney ranks lower than you might expect
Midjourney is still a reference for polished, artistic images, and version 8.2 has been its default since 24 July 2026, with a new Edit Model. It loses points here on access and cost: there is no free trial on its website or Discord, plans start at US$10 a month (about R163 before VAT), and images are public unless you pay for Pro or Mega. If you are a designer who will pay anyway, it may still be your first choice.
One more name worth knowing: Flux, from Black Forest Labs, is available inside Adobe Firefly’s plans as a partner model. For moving pictures, see our AI video generator ranking, and for an all-round assistant, our ranking of the best AI apps. The scoring method is on our methodology page.
Questions people ask
What is the best free AI image generator?
Google Gemini is the best free AI image generator for most people: its free plan creates and edits images with Nano Banana 2, although the images carry a visible watermark. If you want no cost at all, Microsoft's Bing Image Creator gives you 15 fast creations a day and then carries on at standard speed. Adobe Firefly and Leonardo.Ai also give daily free allowances.
Is Bing AI Image Creator free?
Yes. Bing Image Creator is free for anyone with a personal Microsoft account. You get 15 fast creations a day; after that it switches to standard speed, or you can spend Microsoft Rewards points on more fast ones. Microsoft says it is available worldwide except in Russia and China, so it works in South Africa. Microsoft began rolling out its own MAI-Image-2 model to it in March 2026.
Which image model does ChatGPT use now?
ChatGPT uses Images 2.5, which OpenAI released on 8 September 2026 for all ChatGPT plans, including the free one. OpenAI says it edits only what you ask for, keeps details consistent across several rounds of changes and handles complex layouts such as transparent backgrounds. Free users get limited, slower generation; Go costs R149 a month and Plus R399 a month in South Africa.
What is the best AI image editor for my own photos?
For quick fixes, Gemini and ChatGPT are the easiest: upload a photo and describe the change, such as a new background or a removed object. Adobe Firefly adds Generative Fill, and Firefly Pro, at R438.15 a month including VAT, adds Photoshop on web and mobile. Bing Image Creator also offers tools to restore old photos and remove backgrounds.
Can I use AI-generated images commercially?
Usually, but check each tool's terms. Adobe says output from its own Firefly models is safe for commercial use because they are trained on licensed and public-domain content. OpenAI's terms say you own your output, though others may get similar images. Midjourney allows commercial use for subscribers, but companies earning over US$1 million a year need its Pro or Mega plan.
Do AI image generators add watermarks?
Some do. Gemini images carry a visible watermark and Google's hidden SynthID mark. OpenAI adds C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking to ChatGPT images, and Adobe attaches Content Credentials to Firefly output. Free images on Ideogram and Leonardo.Ai are also public, which matters if a design must stay private; their paid plans make your images private.
