An AI CV builder drafts and tailors your CV, checks it against the job advert and puts it into a clean template. For most South African job seekers the best is Teal, because its free plan already covers unlimited CVs, job tracking and keyword matching. Most of these tools call themselves an AI resume builder, because they are American; the CV you send is the same document. Dollar prices are converted at US$1 = R16.32, before VAT.

Why Teal tops the ranking

Teal wins because it is useful before you pay. On its published plans, the free tier includes unlimited CVs, unlimited job tracking, keyword matching that shows the top five keywords from each advert, 10 AI credits for bullet points, and 2 each for summaries and cover letters. That is enough to build one strong CV and tailor it for a handful of applications.

Teal+ removes the limits: unlimited AI writing, every keyword from the advert with a match score, and advanced design settings. It costs US$13 a week, US$29 every 30 days or US$79 every 90 days, so you can pay only for the weeks you are applying hard.

Kickresume, ChatGPT or Claude, and Rezi

Kickresume has the best templates for the money: 40+ CV and matching cover letter designs, an AI writer that drafts from your job title and the advert, and an ATS checker. The AI needs Premium, which costs US$54 a year (about R73 a month), US$27 a quarter or US$19 a month.

ChatGPT or Claude write the strongest content of any tool here, as long as you feed them the advert and your real achievements. ChatGPT is billed in rand at R149 for Go and R399 for Plus, and Claude Pro costs US$20 (about R326 before VAT). Both have free plans. What they lack is templates, scoring and job tracking. For more on choosing a writing assistant, see the best AI writing tools.

Rezi is built around applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software many employers use to sort applications. Its Rezi Score and keyword targeting show how your CV lines up with the advert. The free plan is tight, at one CV and three downloads, but a US$149 lifetime plan suits anyone who changes jobs often.

Enhancv, Canva, Jobscan and LinkedIn

Enhancv shows South Africans rand prices: R229 a month, R465 for 3 months or R699 for 6 months. It has clean templates, content suggestions and one-click tailoring to an advert, but its free plan lasts 7 days. Canva has thousands of CV templates and costs R110 a month for Pro, but it does not match your CV to an advert, so write the content elsewhere first.

Jobscan scans a CV you already have against a job advert and lists what is missing. Five scans a month are free, and paid plans cost US$49.95 a month. LinkedIn Premium Career includes a writing assistant for your profile and resume, which helps if recruiters look you up, but it is not a CV builder.

CV template South Africa: what government jobs ask for

There is no single South African CV template, but the public service sets clear rules. According to the DPSA’s vacancy circulars, you apply on the latest Z83 form plus a CV, and using an old version of the Z83 gets you disqualified. The Z83 asks for your ID number and has its own references section, with each referee’s name, relationship to you and phone number.

The DPSA’s 2022 practice note adds two points. Your CV counts as an extension of the Z83, and you are accountable for what it says. You do not need to attach copies of qualifications when you apply: departments are encouraged to ask for certified copies only from shortlisted candidates. For private-sector jobs, follow the advert’s instructions.

How to use ChatGPT or Claude as an AI CV writer

  1. Paste the full job advert first, so the AI knows what the employer wants.
  2. List your real roles, dates and achievements, with numbers you can prove.
  3. Ask for tailored bullet points and a short summary for this advert only.
  4. Ask which requirements in the advert your CV does not yet show.
  5. Rewrite the result in your own words, then put it into a clean template.

Keep personal details you do not need out of the chat, such as your ID number and home address. You can add them to the final document yourself.

The problem with an AI CV that sounds generic

An AI CV that is left unedited tends to use the same inflated phrases as everyone else’s, and a hiring manager reading dozens of applications notices. Worse, AI will happily invent results, job titles or skills if you ask it to “make this stronger”. On the Z83, the declaration you sign says false information can disqualify you or lead to disciplinary action if you are appointed. Use AI to organise and tighten what you really did, then make every line something you can explain in an interview.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI CV builder?

Teal tops our September 2026 ranking at 8.0 out of 10. Its free plan gives unlimited CVs, job tracking and keyword matching against each advert, with some AI writing credits, and Teal+ costs US$29 every 30 days (about R473 before VAT). Kickresume has the best templates for the money, and ChatGPT or Claude write the strongest content if you prompt them well.

Is there a free AI CV builder?

Yes. Teal's free plan is the most complete, with unlimited CVs and a few AI credits. ChatGPT and Claude have free plans that write well, and Canva has free templates with up to 20 uses a month of its AI tools. Rezi's free plan allows one CV and three downloads, Kickresume's has no AI writer, and Enhancv's lasts 7 days.

Should I put my ID number on my CV in South Africa?

For public service jobs, yes: the DPSA's Z83 application form asks for your ID number, and you submit it with your CV. For other jobs, follow the advert. Your ID number does not show your skills, so you can leave it off a CV you upload to job sites and give it when an employer asks for it.

Do South African CVs need references?

For public service posts, yes: the Z83 form has its own references section, asking for each referee's name, relationship to you and phone number, and you attach your CV to it. For private-sector jobs, follow what the advert asks for. Either way, ask your referees before you list them and make sure their contact details are current.

Is ChatGPT good for writing a CV?

Yes, if you give it detail. Paste the job advert and a list of your real achievements, with numbers you can back up, and ask it to tailor your bullets and summary. ChatGPT Free works for this, and Go (R149) or Plus (R399) raise the limits. Then edit the result in your own words and put it into a clean template.

Can employers tell if my CV was written by AI?

Often it shows, because unedited AI drafts sound vague and inflated, and interviews test what your CV claims. Use AI to organise and tighten real achievements, then rewrite in your own words. Never let it invent job titles, results or qualifications: on the Z83, false information can disqualify you or lead to disciplinary action.

How Ranker works. Every product and provider is compared on public information and scored against the same published criteria. No vendor pays for rank or placement. One relationship you should know about: Zaiq, rated first among South African AI development partners, is a business related to Ranker, and that is disclosed on every page that rates it. Everything else on the board is scored with no relationship behind it.
