The best AI logo generator for most small businesses is Looka: it designs logos free, and US$72 once (about R1,175 before VAT) buys high-resolution and vector files with full ownership. Canva is the best free AI logo generator if a PNG is enough, and Brandmark is the cheapest route to vector files at US$35. We compared seven tools on what free really includes, what usable files cost and whether you could register the result as a trade mark.
Why Looka is the best AI logo generator
Looka starts from your business name, then generates logo options you can edit without paying. You pay only when you want the files. The US$72 Premium Logo Package includes PNG, SVG, EPS and PDF files, colour variations with transparent backgrounds, unlimited changes after purchase and full ownership.
Skip the US$35 Basic package unless you only need a quick image: it is one low-resolution PNG. The Brand Kit subscription, US$96 a year (about R1,567 before VAT), adds hi-res and vector files plus 300+ ready-to-use branded assets such as business cards, social posts, email signatures, letterheads and invoices. Looka says you keep ownership of the logo even after the subscription ends.
What free AI logo generators really give you
Free usually means free to design. Downloading a file you can actually use is where the costs start.

Dollar prices are converted at US$1 = R16.32 and exclude the 15% VAT charged on foreign digital services in South Africa.
A usable logo needs three things: a vector file (SVG, EPS or PDF) that stays sharp at any size, a PNG with a transparent background for websites and documents, and a one-colour version for stamps, embroidery and dark backgrounds. AI image tools such as ChatGPT and Ideogram make pictures rather than logo packages, so budget for turning the result into proper files.
AI logo design: how to get a result you can use
Start with your business name, what you sell and three words for the feel you want, such as warm, local and reliable. Generate plenty of options, shortlist two or three, and check each one at the size of a WhatsApp profile picture and a website icon. Simple marks in one or two colours survive being shrunk, printed and embroidered; detailed illustrations rarely do.
Before you pay, look for similar logos and names in your industry. AI tools can produce look-alike designs: OpenAI’s terms, for example, warn that output may not be unique and that other users may get similar results.
Can you trademark an AI-generated logo in South Africa?
A registered trade mark lets you stop others using the same or a confusingly similar mark for the same or similar goods or services (section 34). Under the Trade Marks Act 194 of 1993, a mark must be capable of distinguishing your goods or services from other people’s (section 9), and it cannot be registered if it is identical or so similar to someone else’s registered mark, for the same or similar goods or services, that it is likely to cause confusion (section 10). A registration lasts 10 years and can be renewed (section 37).
That creates two risks for AI logos. Template logos are shared with every other user, and AI output may be close to someone else’s mark. You apply through CIPC: its published fees are R590 per class to apply, R190 per class for a special search and R260 to renew, and a basic e-search of the register is free. CIPC’s stated turnaround for the first official action on a new application is 10 months.
Copyright is less clear. South Africa’s Copyright Act says the author of a computer-generated work is the person who made the arrangements necessary for its creation, a rule added in 1992. How that applies to logos made with today’s AI tools is not settled, so a registered trade mark is usually the clearer way to protect a brand. For a registration or a dispute, speak to a trade mark attorney.
When to hire a designer instead
An AI logo generator is fine for testing an idea, a side hustle or the first version of a brand. Hire a designer when:
- you plan to register a trade mark and need an original, exclusive design;
- the logo goes on packaging, signage or vehicles, where reprinting is expensive;
- you are entering a crowded market where looking like a competitor is a risk;
- you need a full identity, with colours, fonts and rules applied across everything.
Canva itself suggests a local graphic designer if you need exclusive rights to a graphic. Once you have a logo, see our AI website builder ranking, our AI image generator ranking for marketing pictures, and the best AI tools for South African business.
Questions people ask
Is there a truly free AI logo generator?
Partly. Canva and Adobe Express let you design and download a logo free, though Canva needs a paid plan for a transparent background. Looka and Brandmark let you design free but charge to download: US$72 for Looka's vector package and US$35 for Brandmark's PNG and vector files. Image tools such as ChatGPT and Ideogram make pictures, not logo packages.
Can I trademark a logo made with AI in South Africa?
Possibly, if it is distinctive. The Trade Marks Act requires a mark that can distinguish your goods or services, and it bars marks confusingly similar to registered ones. Canva says its template logos cannot be registered, and OpenAI warns that AI output may not be unique. CIPC charges R590 per class to apply. Speak to a trade mark attorney before relying on an AI design.
Who owns a logo made with an AI logo maker?
Check the terms. Looka's Premium package and Brand Kit include full ownership, and Brandmark includes full copyright in every package. OpenAI's terms assign you the output, and Ideogram claims no ownership. Canva gives you only a non-exclusive licence to its templates and stock elements, which is why a template logo cannot be registered as a trade mark.
What logo files does a small business need?
At minimum: a vector file (SVG, EPS or PDF) that stays sharp at any size, a PNG with a transparent background for websites and documents, and a one-colour version for dark backgrounds, stamps and embroidery. Looka's Premium package includes PNG, SVG, EPS and PDF files with transparent versions, and Brandmark's Basic package includes PNG and vector files.
How much does it cost to register a trade mark in South Africa?
CIPC charges R590 per class to file a trade mark application, and a special search of the register costs R190 per class; a basic e-search is free. CIPC's stated turnaround for the first official action on a new application is 10 months. Registration lasts 10 years, and renewal costs R260. Attorney fees, if you use one, are extra.
When should I hire a logo designer instead?
Hire a designer when you plan to register a trade mark, when the logo goes on packaging, signage or vehicles, or when you are entering a crowded market and cannot risk looking like a competitor. AI tools are fine for testing an idea or a first version. Canva itself suggests a local designer if you need exclusive rights to a graphic.

How Ranker works. Every product and provider is compared on public information and scored against the same published criteria. No vendor pays for rank or placement. One relationship you should know about: Zaiq, rated first among South African AI development partners, is a business related to Ranker, and that is disclosed on every page that rates it.
