An AI website builder creates a working site from a short description and then lets you edit it. For most South African small businesses, Wix is the best AI website builder in 2026: it builds the whole site and connects to local payment providers such as Yoco and Peach Payments. Here is how eight builders compare on published prices, local payments and domains.

Why Wix is the best AI website builder for most businesses

Wix’s AI website builder, part of Wix Harmony, creates a full, industry-specific site from a description of your business. You can then keep prompting its built-in AI agent, Aria, or switch to drag and drop for precise changes. That mix suits owners who want a quick start without being stuck with whatever the AI produced first.

Wix also lists more South African payment providers than most general site builders. Its help centre lists PayPal, Yoco, Paystack, Peach Payments, DPO Group, Payflex and iKhokha for South Africa, but not PayFast. You can start free. A custom domain and online payments need a paid plan, and payments start on Core at US$29 a month billed yearly (about R473 before VAT). Wix says prices vary by location and shows the final price at checkout.

Can you use an AI website builder free?

Several builders let you create a site free, which is enough to test an idea. Wix, WordPress.com, Framer and Durable have free plans, and Lovable gives limited free use. The trade-offs are similar everywhere: you get the builder’s own web address instead of your .co.za, fewer features, and usually no online payments. Shopify offers a 3-day trial, then US$1 a month for three months, and Squarespace a 14-day trial. Hostinger has no free plan but offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Online stores and South African payment gateways

If you plan to sell online, check payment support before you think about design. Each gateway’s own integration list shows:

  • PayFast lists plugins for Shopify and WooCommerce.
  • Yoco lists integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix.
  • Peach Payments lists plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix, among others.

Shopify is the most complete store platform here and works with all three. Note the extra fee: when you use a third-party gateway, Shopify charges 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of the gateway’s own fees. WordPress.com’s Commerce plan is built on WooCommerce, which also works with all three. Squarespace takes payments through Stripe or PayPal. Stripe marks South Africa as an extended-network country, so check that it accepts your business before you build a shop on Squarespace.

Your .co.za domain

Most South African businesses want a .co.za address. The .co.za registry is run by the ZA Registry Consortium (ZARC), which publishes the list of accredited registrars you can buy from. Wix says you cannot buy or transfer a .za domain through Wix, but you can connect one bought from another registrar on a paid plan. Several builders include a free domain for the first year; check that .co.za is among the extensions on offer before you count on it, and register the domain in your own name so you keep it if you change builders.

App builders: Lovable, Bolt and v0

Lovable, Bolt and v0 build working web apps from a prompt: booking tools, client portals, dashboards and simple software. Lovable’s Pro plan costs US$25 a month (about R408 before VAT) with 100 monthly credits and custom domains. Bolt’s Pro plan is also US$25 a month on monthly billing, and its free plan puts Bolt branding on your site. v0 by Vercel has a free plan with US$5 of monthly credits, and Plus starts at US$30 a user a month (about R490). These tools produce code, so someone needs to check security, data handling and payments before real customers use the app. Our AI coding tools ranking covers them from a developer’s side.

Webflow and when to consider it

Webflow is built for designers, marketers and agencies. Its site plans start at US$15 a month billed yearly (about R245 before VAT), and its ecommerce plans start at US$29 a month billed yearly with a 2% transaction fee. It is powerful, but it assumes more design knowledge than the builders ranked above.

When a builder is enough, and when you need a proper build

A builder is usually enough when you need:

  • a brochure site with services, prices, photos and contact details
  • online bookings, or a shop with a modest catalogue
  • a blog or landing pages for campaigns

A proper build by a developer makes sense when you need:

  • to connect the site to your own systems, such as stock, accounting or a customer database
  • checkout rules, quotes, subscriptions or pricing logic a builder cannot handle
  • to process sensitive personal information, such as medical or financial details, under strict POPIA controls
  • high traffic, many languages or a very large product catalogue
  • full ownership of the code, so you can host it anywhere

If you are unsure, start with a builder. You can move to a custom build once the business has shown what it needs.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI website builder in 2026?

For most South African small businesses, Wix. Its AI builder creates a complete site from a description, you can edit everything by hand, and it connects to Yoco, Peach Payments and PayPal. Plans start at US$17 a month billed yearly (about R277 before VAT). Shopify is the better choice for a serious online store, and WordPress.com offers the most room to grow.

Is there a free AI website builder?

Yes. Wix, WordPress.com, Framer and Durable let you build a site free, and Lovable gives limited free use for app-style builds. Free plans use the builder's own web address rather than your .co.za, have fewer features and mostly exclude online payments. They are good for testing an idea, but a business site usually needs a paid plan.

Which website builders accept PayFast, Yoco or Peach Payments?

According to each gateway's own integration lists, PayFast supports Shopify and WooCommerce, while Yoco and Peach Payments support Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix. Wix's South African list includes Yoco and Peach but not PayFast. Squarespace relies on Stripe or PayPal, and none of the three local gateways lists it.

Can I use a .co.za domain with an AI website builder?

Yes, on most paid plans. You buy the .co.za from an accredited registrar, listed by the .ZA registry operator ZARC, and connect it to your builder. Wix says it cannot sell or transfer .za domains, but you can connect one bought elsewhere on a paid plan. Register the domain in your own name so you keep it if you switch builders.

How much does an AI website builder cost in South Africa?

Most small business plans cost between about R65 and R800 a month before VAT. WordPress.com Personal is US$4 a month billed yearly (about R65), Shopify Basic US$19 (about R310) and Wix Core US$29 (about R473). Squarespace prices in rand, from R300 a month billed annually. Hostinger's US$2.99 needs a 48-month prepayment and renews at US$10.99.

When does a business need a custom website instead of a builder?

When the site must connect to your own systems, such as stock or accounting, needs checkout or pricing logic a builder cannot handle, or processes sensitive personal information under strict POPIA controls. High traffic, many languages or a very large catalogue also point to a proper build. For a brochure site, bookings or a modest shop, a builder is usually enough.
