Google AI Mode is the best AI search engine for most South Africans in 2026. It is free, it has been available here since August 2025, and it now works in Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sesotho and Setswana as well as English. Perplexity is the better tool when you need to check every claim, and ChatGPT search is the easy choice if you already live in ChatGPT. Here is how seven AI search engines compare on their published features, citations and rand prices.

Why Google AI Mode is the best AI search engine for South Africans

Google calls AI Mode its most powerful AI search. It splits your question into subtopics, searches for each at the same time, and writes an answer with links to its sources. When Google’s confidence is too low, it shows a set of web links instead. You can ask with text, voice, images or files, and follow up without starting again. Open it at google.com/ai, from the AI Mode tab or in the Google app.

Two things put it first for local readers. It launched in South Africa on 21 August 2025, and it supports Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sesotho and Setswana alongside English. It also draws on Google’s index. Signed-in users can pick Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode, in English, with daily limits, and Google AI Pro at R429.99 a month gives higher access to it and to Deep Search.

AI Overviews, the summaries at the top of normal Google results, are available here too. They cannot be switched off, but the Web filter after a search shows plain links only.

Perplexity: the best for research you can check

Perplexity was built as an answer engine, and its citations are the best here. Every answer carries numbered inline citations, and a click expands a snippet from the source. The free plan gives cited answers with basic models and a few advanced searches a day. Pro at US$20 a month (about R326 before VAT, or R399.99 in the iPhone app) adds Deep Research, a choice of models such as GPT-6 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5, and premium data from sources such as PitchBook and Statista.

Two catches: Perplexity bills in US dollars, and by default your searches may be used to improve its AI, so opt out in account settings if that matters to you.

The best Perplexity alternative

If Perplexity’s dollar pricing puts you off, Google AI Mode is the best free alternative, with Google’s index and South African languages. ChatGPT search is free on every ChatGPT plan, even when you are not signed in, and ChatGPT’s paid plans are billed in rand. Gemini’s Deep Research, free on every plan, is the closest match to Perplexity’s research reports. For privacy, Brave Search gives free AI answers from its own index, and Kagi is a paid search engine with no ads.

Free vs paid AI search, in rand

You can do most AI searching for R0. Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot, Brave and Gemini all have free plans; only Kagi asks you to pay after a 100-search trial. Paid plans mostly raise limits. The cheapest useful upgrades are billed in rand: Google AI Plus at R104.99 and ChatGPT Go at R149. Perplexity Pro costs US$20 (about R326 before VAT), and Kagi runs from US$5 to US$25 a month, plus tax.

Which AI search engine is the most private?

Brave Search says it does not profile you, runs its own index and keeps its AI answers free; Brave Search Premium at US$3 a month removes ads. Kagi has no ads and no tracking and is funded by its users. The others tie searches more closely to an account: Google AI Mode works best with Search history on, Perplexity may use searches to improve its AI unless you opt out, ChatGPT uses your approximate location from your IP address, and Copilot keeps signed-in history for 18 months by default.

  • Ask a specific question with the place, year or product you mean, such as “in South Africa”.
  • Open the sources. AI answers can be wrong or out of date, as Google and OpenAI both warn.
  • Use a research mode for big decisions: Perplexity’s Deep Research, Gemini’s Deep Research or Ask Brave’s Deep Research mode.
  • Stay in one tool for follow-ups, so it keeps the context of your question.
