ChatGPT is the best AI chatbot for most South Africans in 2026. It has the broadest set of features, a free plan with unlimited text chats, and paid plans billed in rand: Go at R149 and Plus at R399 a month. Google Gemini runs it close on value, Claude leads on writing and coding, and Meta AI is the one you already have inside WhatsApp. Here is how the eight main AI chatbots compare on their published plans and prices.

Why ChatGPT is the best AI chatbot for most people

ChatGPT wins because it pairs the widest feature set with local billing. The free plan runs GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited text chats, within OpenAI’s fair-use guardrails, plus limited uploads, image generation, voice chats and deep research. Go at R149 raises those limits and adds longer memory. Plus at R399 adds OpenAI’s GPT-6 reasoning models and expands deep research, memory and Codex, its coding agent.

For a team, ChatGPT Business costs R400 a seat a month, or R320 a seat billed annually, for teams of 2 to 200. OpenAI says it does not train on business data by default. The trade-offs are real, though. OpenAI says Free and Go accounts may see ads where it is testing them. Consumer chats can train its models unless you switch off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings, Data controls. And ChatGPT no longer works inside WhatsApp.

The best free AI chatbot

Google Gemini has the most generous free plan. For R0 you get Gemini 3.6 Flash, some use of Gemini 3.1 Pro, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats and 15 GB of Google storage. Google AI Plus at R104.99 a month doubles the free usage limits. Google AI Pro at R429.99 gives four times the free usage and includes Gemini in Docs, a 1 million token context window and 5 TB of storage. Google is also offering eligible students a free year of Google AI Plus.

ChatGPT’s free plan is the other strong option, and Meta AI costs nothing inside WhatsApp. DeepSeek is free too, but read the data section below before you paste anything personal into it.

Which AI chat works best for a WhatsApp-first business?

If your customers and staff live on WhatsApp, the picture changed on 15 January 2026. Meta’s WhatsApp Business rules pushed general-purpose assistants such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot off WhatsApp. A European Commission order in June 2026 forced Meta to restore access for rival assistants, but only in the European Economic Area. In South Africa, Meta AI is the only general AI assistant built into WhatsApp. It is free and handy for quick questions, but Meta says it uses conversations with Meta AI to personalise the content and ads you see.

Answering your own customers is a different job. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform terms, last updated on 23 September 2026, bar companies from offering general-purpose AI assistants through the platform, but a business may still use AI to handle its own customer service. The same terms forbid using WhatsApp data to train AI models, apart from fine-tuning a model only you use. For that job you need a WhatsApp Business Platform provider and a bot built around your products and questions, not a chatbot app. Meta charges per delivered message, and from 1 October 2026 that includes service replies, so check its current rate card.

AI chatbots, POPIA and your customers’ data

POPIA applies whenever you put personal information about customers or staff into an AI chatbot. Two sections matter most. Section 72 only allows personal information to go to someone in another country in set cases, such as where the recipient is bound by a law or binding agreement that gives adequate protection, or where the person consents. Section 21 requires a written contract that makes a provider processing personal information for you keep it secure.

In practice, keep client files out of free consumer apps and use a business plan. ChatGPT Business, Claude Team and Enterprise, and Perplexity’s Enterprise plans do not train on your content by default. On personal plans, switch training off: Data controls in ChatGPT, Model Improvement in Claude, Keep activity in Gemini, Training on conversation activity in Copilot and Improve the model in Grok. DeepSeek’s privacy policy says it stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China and uses it to train its models, which makes it a poor fit for any personal information. This is general information, not legal advice, so speak to a POPIA professional about your own setup.

The rest of the ranking

Claude has the strongest writing and coding models here: Opus 5.5 on paid plans, and Fable 5.1, released on 1 September 2026, on Pro through usage credits and on Max. Claude Code comes with Pro. It ranks third because it bills in US dollars on the web and does not create photos or illustrations.

Microsoft Copilot is free on the web, in Windows and on phones. Microsoft 365 Personal at R159 a month puts Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, which is good value if you need Office anyway. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business lists at US$21 a user a month (about R343 before VAT), with a current offer from US$18.

Perplexity is the best here for sourced answers, because every reply carries numbered citations; see our AI search engine ranking. DeepSeek is capable and free, but its data terms rule it out for business use. Grok searches the web and X live, but SuperGrok costs R599.99 a month in the South African App Store.

Mistral’s assistant, renamed from Le Chat to Vibe, is not in the scored list because it now leans towards coding. Its Pro plan is US$14.99 a month before tax (about R245), or R299.99 in the iPhone app.

A European Commission order restored access, but only in the European Economic Area. In South Africa, Meta AI is the only general AI assistant built into WhatsApp. Businesses can still run their own customer-service bots on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Free plans come with usage limits, and some carry conditions: OpenAI may show ads on its free plan, and DeepSeek stores personal data in China.

Is it safe to use an AI chatbot with customer data under POPIA?

It can be, with care. POPIA section 72 limits sending personal information to other countries, and section 21 requires a written contract that makes a provider keep information it processes for you secure.
