Of the best AI apps you can install in South Africa, ChatGPT comes first: the free plan includes unlimited text chats, and paid plans are billed in rand from R149 a month. Google Gemini is a very close second and the best value, and it is taking over as the assistant on most Android phones. Claude is the pick for careful writing, and Meta AI is already inside WhatsApp. We ranked seven apps on their published plans, rand prices and how they use your data.

Free vs paid: what the best AI apps cost in rand

Three of these apps charge in rand on their own websites. ChatGPT costs R149 a month for Go, R399 for Plus and from R1,839 for Pro. Google AI Plus costs R104.99 a month and Google AI Pro R429.99, with Google One storage included. Microsoft 365 Personal, which adds Copilot to Microsoft’s apps, costs R159 a month or R1,599 a year. Claude and Perplexity charge in US dollars on the web, but their iPhone apps show rand prices in the South African App Store: Claude Pro is R399.99 a month, and Perplexity Pro starts at R399.99.

Dollar prices on this page are converted at US$1 = R16.32 and exclude VAT. South Africa charges 15% VAT on foreign digital services, so a US$20 plan (about R326) costs more once VAT is added.

Best AI apps for Android

Google is retiring the old Google Assistant on most phones in favour of Gemini, so on many Android phones Gemini is already the built-in assistant. That makes it the easiest start for Android users, and its free plan includes image editing and Gemini Live voice conversations. ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity and DeepSeek all have Android apps, and Meta AI needs nothing extra if you already use WhatsApp.

How each AI app uses your data

Most of these apps use your conversations to improve their AI unless you change a setting, and the settings differ:

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI may use your content to train its models; you can opt out in settings.
  • Gemini: while Keep Activity is on, Google uses chats to improve its AI and human reviewers read some of them. Turning it off stops training, but chats are then kept for only 72 hours. Google asks you not to enter confidential information.
  • Claude: Anthropic asks whether your chats can be used for training. If you agree, data can be kept for up to five years; if not, for 30 days.
  • Copilot: switch off training on conversation activity and on voice conversations in Copilot’s privacy settings. Microsoft says this does not stop use for advertising, safety and compliance.
  • Perplexity: AI data retention is on by default for Free, Pro and Max; switch it off under Preferences.
  • Meta AI: since 16 December 2025, Meta has used your interactions with its AI to personalise content and ads in most regions. You can adjust ad preferences, but there is no switch to stop it.
  • DeepSeek: its privacy policy says it stores personal data in China and trains on it unless you email its privacy team to opt out.

If you use these apps for work, remember that POPIA applies to personal information about customers or staff that you type or upload. The simplest rule is to keep ID numbers, bank details and client records out of free consumer apps, and to use a business plan with training switched off for company work.

How much mobile data do AI apps use?

Text chats use very little data. Voice conversations, uploading photos and documents, and creating images or video use much more. On a small bundle, keep voice and media work for Wi-Fi, and check whether your network’s bundle rules cover the app you use.

Which AI app should you install first?

Start with ChatGPT if you want one app that does everything, or Gemini if you are on Android and want the cheapest paid plan. Choose Claude for writing and long documents, Copilot if you live in Windows and Microsoft 365, and Perplexity if you want every answer to cite its sources. Questions people ask

What is the best free AI app?

ChatGPT has the most useful free plan for everyday chat, with unlimited text conversations plus limited images, voice and deep research. Google Gemini is close behind and better for pictures, with free image editing, Deep Research and Gemini Live voice. Meta AI is free inside WhatsApp, and DeepSeek is free too, but its privacy policy says it stores personal data in China.

How much does ChatGPT cost in South Africa?

OpenAI sells ChatGPT in rand in South Africa. Its pricing page lists Go at R149 a month, Plus at R399 a month and Pro from R1,839 a month, and the free plan costs nothing. Go raises the free limits on messages, uploads and images, and OpenAI says it may include ads. Plus adds OpenAI's GPT-6 reasoning models, projects and custom GPTs.

Is Meta AI on WhatsApp free?

Yes. Meta AI is free inside WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, and Meta has offered it in South Africa since 2024. TechCentral reported in June 2026 that Meta's paid AI tiers were not yet on sale here. Bear in mind that Meta uses your AI chats to personalise the content and ads you see, and there is no setting to switch that off.

Is DeepSeek safe to use?

It depends on what you share. DeepSeek's privacy policy says it collects and stores personal data in China and uses it to train its models, and you can opt out only by emailing its privacy team. The app is free and capable, but keep personal, client and work information out of it, and use another app for anything sensitive.

What is the best AI app for Android?

Gemini is the natural choice on Android because Google is replacing the old Google Assistant with it on most phones, and its free plan includes image editing and Gemini Live voice. ChatGPT's Android app is the strongest all-rounder if you prefer it. Claude, Copilot, Perplexity and DeepSeek also have Android apps, and Meta AI works inside WhatsApp.

Do AI apps use a lot of mobile data?

Text chats use very little data. Voice conversations, photo and file uploads, and creating images or video use much more. If you are on a small data bundle, keep voice, image and video work for Wi-Fi, and check each app's settings for options that limit media downloads on mobile data.
