The best AI video generator for most South Africans right now is Kling: its 3.0 model makes clips of up to 15 seconds with sound, free accounts can claim daily credits, and paid plans are cheap. Google’s Gemini Omni is the easiest paid option at R104.99 a month in rand, and Adobe Firefly has a free daily allowance. We scored eight tools on their published plans, prices and limits.

What happened to Sora?

OpenAI shut the Sora app and website on 26 April 2026 and switched off the Sora API on 24 September 2026, according to its help centre. Sora is no longer an option, so older lists that rank it near the top are out of date. ChatGPT still makes images, through Images 2.5, but not videos.

Why Kling is the best AI video generator right now

Kling 3.0 generates up to 15 seconds in one go, with native audio and lip-synced dialogue, and it can lock a character’s appearance from a single photo. It exports up to 4K on paid plans, and Kling 4.0 is in early access for subscribers on its top Ultra annual plan.

The free tier is real but limited. Kling says free accounts can claim daily free credits, that free videos carry a watermark and that free image-to-video exports at up to 1080p. It does not publish the daily amount on its free-credits page. Standard costs US$6.99 for the first month, then US$8.80 a month (about R144 before VAT) for 660 credits, and paid plans remove the watermark and cover commercial use.

Can you make AI videos for free?

Yes, within limits. Kling and Adobe Firefly are the best free starting points because both refresh an allowance every day. Firefly’s free tier includes video from Luma’s Ray3.14 model. Runway’s 125 free credits are a one-off, and for talking-avatar videos HeyGen’s free plan makes three watermarked videos a month.

Higgsfield, which many South Africans search for, is a paid studio in practice. Its pricing page lists a free tier for limited use, but its plan comparison shows no video generations on it. Starter costs US$15 a month for 200 credits, and paid plans give access to models such as Kling 3.0 and ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 in one place.

Video files are large, so download finished clips over Wi-Fi rather than on mobile data.

Google Gemini Omni: video inside the Gemini app

In the Gemini app, Google has replaced Veo 3.1 with Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash. It makes 10-second videos with sound, turns up to five photos into a video, extends scenes and lets you edit a clip by describing the change. You need a paid Google AI plan and must be 18 or older. Google AI Plus costs R104.99 a month and includes 200 credits for Flow, Google’s AI film studio; Google AI Pro costs R429.99 a month with 1,000 Flow credits.

The best AI video editor for finishing your clips

People searching for an AI video editor usually want to turn raw clips into a finished post. CapCut is the obvious free choice: a full editor with auto captions and text to speech, plus an AI video generator built on ByteDance’s Seedance 2.5 and more than 100 avatars. CapCut says Pro prices vary by country and device, so check the price in the app before you subscribe.

Runway suits people who want generation and editing in one studio: its paid plans include its own Gen-4.5 model alongside Kling 3.0 and Google’s Nano Banana Pro, plus 4K upscaling. Gemini Omni can also edit a clip by chat, such as swapping a background or restyling a scene.

AI avatar video makers: HeyGen and Synthesia

If you need a presenter rather than a cinematic shot, use an avatar tool. HeyGen turns a script into a video presented by a stock avatar or a custom one of you, and Creator (US$29 a month, about R473 before VAT) removes the watermark and allows videos of up to 30 minutes. Synthesia is built for training and company explainers in more than 160 languages, with Starter at US$18 a month billed yearly. For voice-overs on their own, see our AI voice generator ranking.

What AI video costs in rand

Most video tools sell credits, and a single high-resolution clip can use a large share of a monthly allowance. Adobe (R219.65 a month including VAT) and Google (from R104.99 a month) publish rand prices on their South African pages, and CapCut shows its price in the app. The rest charge in US dollars, with VAT added on top.

Questions people ask

What is the best free AI video generator?

Kling is the best free starting point: it says free accounts can claim daily credits, with a watermark and exports of up to 1080p. Adobe Firefly also refreshes a free daily allowance that covers video, including Luma's Ray3.14 model. Runway gives 125 one-time credits, and HeyGen's free plan makes three avatar videos a month of up to one minute.

Is Sora still available?

No. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app and website on 26 April 2026 and shut down the Sora API on 24 September 2026, according to its help centre. For similar clips with sound today, look at Kling 3.0 or Google's Gemini Omni. ChatGPT itself now focuses on images, through Images 2.5, rather than video.

Can Gemini make videos for free?

No. Google's video page says Gemini Omni needs a Google AI subscription, and those plans are for over-18s. In South Africa, Google AI Plus costs R104.99 a month and includes video generation plus 200 Flow credits, while Google AI Pro costs R429.99 a month with 1,000 Flow credits. Free Gemini users can still create and edit images.

Is there a free version of Higgsfield AI?

Only in a limited way. Higgsfield's pricing page lists a free tier for limited use, but its plan comparison shows no video generations on it. To make videos you need a paid plan: Starter costs US$15 a month, about R245 before VAT, for 200 credits. Its prices exclude VAT, which is added at checkout.

What is the best AI video editor?

CapCut is the best free AI video editor for most people: it combines a full editor with auto captions, text to speech and an AI video generator built on ByteDance's Seedance 2.5. Runway is the stronger paid studio, with several leading models and 4K upscaling. Gemini Omni can also edit a clip by chat, such as swapping the background.

How long can AI-generated videos be?

It depends on the tool. Kling 3.0 makes up to 15 seconds in one generation, and Gemini Omni makes 10-second clips that you can extend. Avatar tools run far longer: HeyGen's paid plans allow videos of up to 30 minutes. Longer pieces are usually built by extending or joining shorter clips in an editor such as CapCut.
