The best ChatGPT alternative for most South Africans is Google Gemini. It has the most generous free plan of any major assistant, and Google bills its paid plans in rand, from R104.99 a month. But the right switch depends on why you want to leave ChatGPT: better writing, sources you can check, privacy or a lower bill. Here are the eight strongest alternatives in September 2026, ranked on their published plans, features and rand prices.
The best ChatGPT alternative by use
| What you need | Best pick | Why | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing | Claude | Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, long context | US$20 (about R326 before VAT) |
| Coding | Claude, or Mistral Vibe | Claude Code on Pro; Vibe’s coding agent | US$20, or US$14.99 before tax |
| Research | Perplexity | Numbered citations on every answer | Free, or US$20 |
| Free use | Gemini | The most generous free plan | R0 |
| Privacy | Duck.ai | Anonymised chats, no training | R0 |
| Microsoft 365 | Copilot | Inside Word, Excel and Outlook | R159 a month |
| Meta AI | Built into WhatsApp | R0 |
Why Gemini is the best ChatGPT alternative for most people
Gemini does almost everything ChatGPT does, and more of it is free. For R0 you get Gemini 3.6 Flash, some use of Gemini 3.1 Pro, image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live voice chats. Google AI Plus at R104.99 a month doubles those limits, and Google AI Pro at R429.99 gives four times the free usage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of storage.
Switching is easy. Gemini can import your chat history from another AI app: you export your data and upload the ZIP file, and the text of your chats moves across. The main drawback is data handling. By default Google keeps Gemini chats for 18 months, and a subset is read by human reviewers, so turn off Keep activity if that bothers you. Google says Gemini chats are not used to show you ads.
Claude, Copilot and Perplexity: the specialists
Claude is the switch for writers and developers. Paid plans run Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, which Anthropic released on 1 September 2026 and calls its most capable model for coding and knowledge work. Claude reads up to 1 million tokens depending on the model. Claude Code, its coding agent, comes with Pro. It bills in US dollars on the web, and it does not create photos or illustrations. See our AI coding tools ranking and AI writing tools ranking for more options.
Microsoft Copilot makes most sense if you already pay for Microsoft 365. Personal at R159 a month puts Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, and Premium at R429 adds Researcher and Analyst. Perplexity is the one to pick when you need to check facts, because every answer shows numbered sources; our AI search engine ranking covers it in full.
ChatGPT alternatives free: what you get for R0
Every tool in this ranking has a free plan. Gemini’s is the most complete. Microsoft Copilot is free on the web, in Windows and on phones. Duck.ai gives free, anonymised access to Claude 4.5 Haiku, GPT-5.4 mini and nano, Mistral Small 4 and open models. Meta AI is free inside WhatsApp, and DeepSeek offers its whole app free with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash.
Free plans have limits. Perplexity’s free plan allows only a few advanced searches a day, Mistral Vibe’s free limits are tight, and Grok keeps its Expert and Heavy modes for paid plans. ChatGPT’s own free plan is still strong, with unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna within fair use, so compare before you move.
Is a chat GPT alternative cheaper in rand?
Usually not. ChatGPT is billed in rand: Go costs R149 a month and Plus R399. Google AI Plus at R104.99 is cheaper than Go, and Microsoft 365 Personal at R159 is close to it while adding the Office apps. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro cost US$20 on the web, about R326 before VAT and about R375 once 15% VAT is added, or R399.99 in their iPhone apps. Mistral’s Pro plan is US$14.99 before tax, about R245.
Privacy: which alternatives keep your chats out of training?
Duck.ai and Proton’s Lumo are built for privacy. DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai does not store your prompts or train on your data, and Proton says Lumo uses zero-access encryption and never trains on your chats; Lumo Plus costs R164.99 a month in the South African App Store. Claude, Mistral, Copilot and Grok let you switch off model training in settings, and Perplexity lets you opt out.
Two cautions. DeepSeek’s privacy policy says it stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China and uses it to train its models. Meta says it uses your conversations with Meta AI to personalise the content and ads you see. If you handle other people’s personal information, POPIA applies, so read our AI chatbot ranking on business use.
