An AI translator turns text, documents or speech from one language into another. For South African languages, the best AI translator in 2026 is Google Translate, because it is free and its own language list covers all 11 official spoken languages. Below, seven options are compared on each vendor’s published language list, free limits, rand prices, document support and data handling.
Which AI translator supports which South African language?
This table uses each vendor’s own language list, checked on 28 September 2026. “Beta” means the vendor marks the language as early access.

Why Google Translate is the best AI translator for South African languages
Coverage decides this ranking. Google Translate lists all 11 official spoken languages, and Google’s 2024 expansion added siSwati and Tshivenda. Its business version, the Cloud Translation API, lists every official spoken language except Tshivenda.
It is also free. The website translates .docx, .pdf, .pptx and .xlsx files up to 10 MB, and PDFs of up to 300 pages, though not on phones. Businesses that need volume can use the Cloud Translation API: the first 500,000 characters a month are free, then it costs US$20 per million characters (about R326 before VAT), and document translation costs US$0.08 a page, or US$8 per 100 pages (about R131). Google says it does not use content sent to the Cloud API to train and improve Google Translate.
Translate English to Zulu: which tool to use
For translating English to Zulu, Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, DeepL and Gemini all list isiZulu officially, and Lelapa AI’s Vulavula marks isiZulu translation as production-ready. The results improve when you write short, plain sentences, avoid idioms and slang, and say who the text is for. Keep names, amounts and dates exactly as they are, then check that they survived the translation.
If you also need the words spoken aloud, see our AI voice generator ranking, which lists the tools with verified isiZulu and Afrikaans voices.
Afrikaans translator options
Afrikaans is the best-supported South African language after English. Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, DeepL, Gemini and Vulavula all list it, and Microsoft’s Custom Translator, which trains a model on your own terminology, supports Afrikaans but none of the African languages in the table above. For polished business documents, DeepL’s paid plans add file translation of up to 30 MB with no data training, from US$8.74 a month billed annually for South Africa (about R143 before VAT).
AI translation quality in African languages
AI translation is usable in African languages but less reliable than in English. The evidence is consistent:
- IrokoBench, a 2024 research benchmark covering 17 African languages including isiZulu, isiXhosa and Sesotho, found a significant performance gap between English and French and African languages across 16 AI models.
- Anthropic’s own figures show Claude scoring lower in Swahili and Yoruba than in English, and the gap is widest on its smaller model.
- Vendors’ own lists show the gap in coverage too: DeepL has no glossary support for its South African languages, and Microsoft’s automatic language detection covers only Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu among them.
Newer models may perform better than the ones in the 2024 research, but no vendor publishes figures for South African languages specifically. Treat AI output in isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi and the other African languages as a draft.
Translating business documents: POPIA and data handling
Business documents often contain personal information, and POPIA protects it. A business stays responsible for that information when it uses a translation service, which means reasonable security measures, a written contract with any provider that processes it on your behalf, and lawful grounds for sending it outside South Africa, where most of these services run.
In practice, choose the plan by what it does with your text:
- Google Cloud Translation API: Google says text is held briefly in memory and not used to train Google Translate.
- Azure Translator: Microsoft says customer data is permanently deleted after processing.
- DeepL paid plans: listed with no data training.
- ChatGPT Business: no training on business data by default. Consumer ChatGPT plans can train on chats unless you opt out.
- Gemini: Google advises against entering confidential information while Keep Activity is on.
- Claude: you can opt out of model training on every plan.
Remove ID numbers, health details and banking details you do not need before translating, and ask a privacy professional about your own obligations. Our AI email writer ranking covers the same POPIA points for customer emails.

Questions people ask
What is the best AI translator for South African languages?
Google Translate, because it is free and its own language list covers all 11 official spoken languages, including siSwati, Tshivenda and isiNdebele. Microsoft Translator and DeepL cover seven each and suit businesses that want stricter data handling. For isiZulu, Sesotho and Afrikaans in a contact centre or app, Lelapa AI's Vulavula is built for local languages.
How do I translate English to Zulu accurately?
Use a tool that lists isiZulu officially: Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, DeepL and Gemini all do. Keep sentences short, avoid idioms and slang, and give context such as who the text is for. For anything official, such as a contract, medical note or public notice, have a fluent isiZulu speaker check the result before you use it.
What is the best Afrikaans translator?
Afrikaans is the best-supported South African language after English. Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, DeepL, Gemini and Vulavula all list it, and Microsoft also offers custom translation models for Afrikaans. For polished business documents, DeepL's paid plans add file translation with no data training. For quick everyday use, Google Translate is free.
Is AI translation accurate for isiZulu and other African languages?
It is usable but less reliable than for English. IrokoBench, a 2024 research benchmark that includes isiZulu, isiXhosa and Sesotho, found a significant performance gap between English and African languages across 16 AI models. Anthropic's own figures also show lower scores in Swahili and Yoruba than in English. Newer models may do better, so check important text.
Is it safe to put business documents into an AI translator?
Only with the right plan. Documents often contain personal information, which POPIA protects. Use a service that does not keep or train on your text, such as Google's Cloud Translation API, Azure Translator or DeepL's paid plans, rather than a free consumer app, and remove ID numbers or health details you do not need. Ask a privacy professional about your own obligations.
Which AI translator is free?
Google Translate and the Microsoft Translator app are free. DeepL's free plan allows 50,000 characters and one file a month, and ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude have free plans with usage limits. For businesses, Google's Cloud Translation API gives 500,000 free characters a month and Azure Translator gives 2 million, before per-character charges start.
